Homemade Dog Treats: A Thoughtful Hostess Gift Idea
When it comes to hostess gifts, it’s easy to fall back on the usual bottle of wine or store-bought flowers. But what if you could bring something truly unexpected and completely charming?
These homemade pumpkin and peanut butter dog treats are a thoughtful, unique hostess gift for any dog lover. Not only are they easy to make, but they feel extra special when packaged in a glass jar and finished with a pretty ribbon and a handwritten tag. Today, I’m sharing my go-to recipe, step-by-step instructions, plus a free printable gift tag to make your homemade dog treats look boutique-worthy. Let’s make something that leaves a lasting impression, one soft detail at a time.

Why Homemade Dog Treats Make the Perfect Hostess Gift
When you walk into a friend’s home for a dinner party, it’s a sweet gesture to bring something for the humans. But imagine the host’s delight when you hand them a jar of fresh-baked dog treats for their furry family member!
It’s an unexpected, personal touch and shows you thought not just of them, but of the four-legged friend who makes their house feel like home.
And let’s be honest: treats that smell faintly of peanut butter and pumpkin are almost impossible for pups to resist.

Soft Details, Lasting Impressions
This idea fits so naturally into my belief that the little details matter.
In this case, it might be:
- Choosing a classic red ribbon that feels timeless and playful
- Adding a handwritten tag
- Using a bone-shaped cutter for extra charm
- Baking the treats just a little longer so they’re extra crunchy (dogs love that!)
These gentle details turn something simple into a gift that feels thoughtful and memorable.

Homemade Pumpkin & Peanut Butter Dog Treats Recipe
Servings:
About 20–30 small treats (depending on cutter size)
Prep time:
10 minutes
Cook time:
20–25 minutes
Total time:
About 35 minutes
Ingredients
- 2 ½ cups whole wheat flour (or oat flour if your pup is wheat-sensitive)
- ½ cup canned pumpkin puree (plain, not pumpkin pie filling)
- ½ cup natural creamy peanut butter (make sure it doesn’t contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs)
- 2 large eggs
- Optional: 2–4 tablespoons water, as needed to bring the dough together
Instructions
1. Preheat & Prep
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
2️. Make the Dough
In a large bowl, combine the pumpkin puree, peanut butter, and eggs. Stir until smooth and creamy.
Gradually add the flour, mixing until a slightly stiff dough forms. If the dough feels too dry or crumbly, add water one tablespoon at a time until it holds together.
3️. Roll & Cut
Lightly flour your work surface. Roll the dough out to about ¼-inch thick.
Use your favorite cookie cutters — bone-shaped, heart, or even small circles work beautifully — and cut out as many treats as you can.
Place them on your prepared baking sheet, close together but not touching.
4️. Bake
Bake for 20–25 minutes, until the treats are golden and feel fairly firm to the touch.
For extra crunch (which dogs love), turn off the oven and let the treats cool inside.
5️. Cool & Store
Allow the treats to cool completely before serving them to your pup.
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for about 5–7 days. You can also refrigerate or freeze them to keep them fresh longer.

How to Package Your Dog Treats as a Gift
Now for my favorite part — turning these homemade dog treats into a gift that feels as special as it tastes.
Here’s how I do it:
Fill a glass jar with the cooled treats. I love using simple mason jars or clamp-top jars for a vintage look.
Tie a ribbon around the lid.
I couldn’t decide between a soft pink or classic red ribbon… but in the end, the red felt like such a playful, traditional dog color and I think it makes the jar pop beautifully!
Add a handwritten note or use my free printable gift tag (scroll down to download!).
A simple message like “Homemade Pumpkin & Peanut Butter Biscuits — taste tested & approved!” is enough to make the gift feel personal.
Style the jar on a tray with fresh flowers or seasonal accents if you’re giving it in person.
These soft details transform a humble jar of treats into something truly giftable.

Taste Tested & Approved
Of course, the ultimate test comes from the real experts — our dogs!
I always let my own pups taste test these treats fresh out of the oven. And judging by the happy tail wags and crunchy bites, they get two paws up every time.
Not only is baking these treats a fun kitchen project, but seeing how much our dogs love them is the best reward.
Make Everyday Moments Feel Special
One of the things I love most about this recipe is that it isn’t just for gifting — it’s also a simple way to add a little joy to your everyday routine.
Whether you bake these:
- As a rainy day activity
- To celebrate your dog’s birthday
- Or just because you feel like surprising your pup
…you’ll find that the process itself becomes part of the memory.
It’s a reminder that small, thoughtful choices, from the ingredients you use to the ribbon you tie, really do create lasting impressions.

Final Tips & Variations
- Use oat flour if your dog is sensitive to wheat.
- Swap peanut butter for almond butter (again, make sure it’s xylitol-free).
- Add ground cinnamon (about ½ tsp) for a warm, cozy scent.
- Make mini treats with smaller cutters for tiny dogs or training rewards.
Always introduce new treats gradually and check with your vet if your dog has allergies or dietary concerns.
