Ingredients

  • cups (300g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp (12g) baking powder
  • ½ tsp (3g) baking soda
  • 1 tsp (3g) garlic powder
  • 1 tsp (2.5g) Old Bay seasoning
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • ¼ tsp freshly cracked black pepper
  • 1 cup (240g) cold buttermilk
  • ½ cup (113g) unsalted butter melted and cooled slightly
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp honey or granulated sugar
  • 2 cups (226g) sharp yellow cheddar cheese freshly shredded
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley chopped, optional
Garlic Herb Butter Topping
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter melted
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp dried parsley or 1 tsp fresh parsley
  • pinch of salt or Old Bay seasoning

Equipment

  • 9x5 inch loaf pan
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Rubber spatula
  • measuring cups & measuring spoons
  • Pastry brush

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan generously with butter or line it with parchment paper leaving an overhang on the sides for easy removal.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, garlic powder, Old Bay seasoning, salt, and black pepper until well combined. Fold in the shredded cheddar cheese so the strands are light coated in flour (this keeps the cheese from sinking to the bottom).
  3. In a separate bowl or measuring cup, whisk together the cold buttermilk, melted butter, eggs, and honey until smooth.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients. Use a spatula to gently fold just until combined and no dry flour pockets remain.
  5. Transfer the batter to your prepared loaf pan and smooth the top gently. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
  6. While the bread bakes, combine the ¼ cup melted butter, garlic powder, parsley, and pinch of Old Bay in a small dish. As soon as the loaf comes out of the oven, brush the warm garlic butter generously all over the top crust.
