Ingredients

The Base
  • ½ cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup whole milk
The Gooey Layer
  • ½ cup light brown sugar
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
The Final Step
  • 1 cup boiling water

Equipment

  • 9x9 inch baking dish or deep-dish pie plate
  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Small mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups & spoons
  • kettle or saucepan

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Pour the melted butter into a deep 9x9 inch baking dish or a deep-dish pie plate.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, 1 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the milk until just combined, a few lumps are okay.
  3. Pour the batter directly over the melted butter. Do not stir.
  4. In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar, 1/4 cup white sugar, and cinnamon. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the top of the batter. Again, do not stir.
  5. Carefully pour the 1 cup of boiling water over the entire dish.
  6. Slide it into the oven for 40–45 minutes. The top should be golden brown and crackly, while the center stays slightly wobbly.
