Ingredients

For the Base
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup Granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp Baking powder
  • ¼ tsp Salt
  • ½ cup Milk
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 4 tbsp Unsalted butter melted
For the Topping
  • ¾ cup Brown sugar packed
  • ¼ cup Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • cups Hot water or coffee

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls 1 medium, 1 small
  • Whisk or spatula
  • Measuring cups & spoons
  • 8x8 or 9x9 baking dish, or deep pie dish

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8x8 or 9x9-inch baking dish.
  2. Make the base batter:
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Add milk, vanilla, and melted butter, stirring until smooth. Pour into the prepared baking dish and smooth out the top.
  3. Add the topping:
In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and cocoa powder. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter, don’t stir.
  4. Pour on hot water:
Gently pour the hot water over everything. Do not stir. It will look strange and watery, but trust the process!
  5. Bake:
Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the top looks cracked and set but a gooey chocolate sauce is bubbling underneath.
  6. Cool slightly and serve warm:
Spoon into bowls and serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of cream.
